End-of-year bonus

Your household employee's end-of-year bonus

In Mauritius, every household employee is entitled to an end-of-year bonus equal to 1/12 of their earnings for the calendar year (Workers' Rights Act 2019, s. 54). You pay at least 75% of it no later than 5 working days before 25 December, and the balance no later than the last working day of the year.

Updated on Workers' Rights Act 2019, s. 54

How to calculate the bonus

Add up all the earnings paid to your employee during the calendar year (January to December, or since they started), then divide by 12. For an employee on a fixed salary who worked the whole year, the bonus therefore equals one month's salary: it is the Mauritian "13th month".

The two deadlines

  1. At least 75% of the bonus no later than 5 working days before 25 December. As December's pay is not yet known, this instalment is based on an estimate for the year.
  2. The balance no later than the last working day of the year, once December's pay is known.

Example: an employee hired in August

Your household employee started on 1 August 2026, on Rs 13,333.33 gross a month. She will have received 5 months' salary during the year (August to December).

Rs 13,333.33 x 5 months / 12

≈ Rs 5,556

By the 5th working day before Christmas (75%)

Rs 4,166.66

Balance, by the last working day of the year

Rs 1,388.89

Gross amounts. Employee CSG and NSF are deducted from the bonus, and you pay the matching employer shares; they are calculated separately from the month's salary. PRGF is not due on the bonus. The rates are set out in the guide to CSG, NSF and PRGF.

What if the employee leaves during the year?

The bonus is due pro rata to the earnings received up to the date of leaving, and is paid with the final amounts owed.

  • If you end the employment: the pro rata bonus is due.
  • Resignation: the employee is entitled to it if they have at least 8 months' service.
Resignation cases depend on the employee's length of service: if you are unsure about your situation, check with the Ministry of Labour before settling the final account.
