Minimum wage 2026

The minimum wage for a household employee in Mauritius

In 2026, the National Minimum Wage in Mauritius is Rs 17,745 a month for a full-time household employee (48 hours a week). For part-time work, it is calculated pro rata to the hours, with an hourly rate at least 5% higher: for example Rs 5,823 a month for 15 hours a week.

The full-time amount

The National Minimum Wage applies to household employees just as it does to other workers. Since 1 January 2026, it has been Rs 17,745 a month (up from Rs 17 110). For a household employee, full time means 48 hours a week (Domestic Workers (Remuneration) Regulations 2019). This is a gross salary: employee CSG and NSF are then deducted.

The part-time calculation

An employee working fewer than 48 hours a week is paid pro rata to the full-time hourly rate, increased by at least 5% (Workers' Rights Act 2019, s. 28). The monthly formula becomes:

Minimum wage = Rs 17,745 x hours per week / 48 x 1.05

Worked examples

15 hours a week

Rs 5,823

Rs 17,745 x 15 / 48 x 1.05

24 hours a week

Rs 9,317

Rs 17,745 x 24 / 48 x 1.05

48 hours a week

Rs 17,745

Full time, no uplift

Gross monthly minimums, rounded up to the next rupee.

So a housekeeper who comes three mornings a week for 5 hours (15 hours a week) must earn at least Rs 5,823 gross a month. At 24 hours, the minimum rises to Rs 9,317. These amounts do not include overtime, which is paid at a higher rate on top.

The 2026 salary compensation

For 2026 the government has set a salary compensation of Rs 635 a month for a full-time employee whose basic salary does not exceed Rs 50 000. For a part-time employee paid less than Rs 17 110, it is 3.7% of the salary. How it interacts with the minimum wage increase depends on each employee's situation: check the regulations or ask the Ministry of Labour if you are unsure.

Why it matters

A salary below the minimum is not lawful, even if the employee agrees to it. Lakazone works out the minimum that applies to each contract based on the hours agreed, and warns you if the salary entered is too low.
